So Anna Hazare Movement is a stupendous success and first and foremost shows the true character of Indian democracy. People have opinions and they are always willing to share it in India on all facets of society but to get them out of their homes, except on voting day, in large numbers without money or muscle or sworn political affiliation, is very very difficult! Which is the reason why there have been very localized – or movements that have stayed with a geographically limited space. JP Narayan did it, Anti- Reservation did it…at considerably larger scales. But to get people out to sit on dharnas and agitate for a cause where the outcome is distant – an authority to evaluate and hold government and its functionaries accountable. It is not something that will serve up a prize right away…
all seems good then who could possibly object to this obvious, earthy kind of a process? lets see….
People who like to weigh in on the distant outcome but do not want to participate in the present.
People who believe they have an “unaccounted for” say in influencing the government functions and functionaries….
People who need to maintain two sides – one the people and the other the government with a huge gap in the middle so they can be the unseen link. People who believe in twisting words to inspire ridicule and criticism but not in the power of straight talk and simplicity
People who are tolerated because they entertain and engage both the masses and the classes but they have no real followers
Arundhatti Roy of the Booker fame and Mahesh Bhatt of the “different” cinema claims like to be included, but not as ordinary people…they are first “eminent” and then citizens”. They first need to be made to feel special and then congratulated on making a difference….the realism of being ordinary is simply too surreal for them! so Arundhatti is pissed, why is Anna not doing something different like her, meet Geelani in her drawing room, and over some whiskey discuss the outcomes for Kashmir…whats this plebian not eating thing Anna Ji…and Mahesh Bhatt, well he wants to make a movie with his son ofcourse, b/c Headly his producer bailed on him when he got locked up in USA for being a Terrorist.
They both have so many causes they support by writing strong emails, and stronger speeches, but unfortunately, poorly crafted words can entertain only for so long and they miss all that attention..Its an old malady with no cure -i ts called Attention Seeking Behavior Syndrome! when they were young and pretty, it was kind of nice..like watchin fashion tv models talk about Karma and Kismat!
Bhai you both are old now …time to take a pill and chill!
